Patrick is the founder of Clifton Consults, a strategy consulting firm for clients in music, audio and tech. Patrick started his career in the indie music sector, before relocating to the US to pursue a master’s degree, during which time he was offered a role at Amazon in Seattle. He relocated back to the UK with the company and over the next ten years helped to transform Amazon’s music business in the UK, where he launched and grew the firm’s music streaming service. In 2019 Patrick was appointed Head of Music, a general management role overseeing Amazon’s streaming, download and retail businesses. Patrick left Amazon in 2022 to take a leadership role in the vinyl records industry. He set up Clifton Consults in 2023.

I set up Clifton Consults at the end of 2023 as I detected some seismic shifts occuring in the industry and wanted to use my experience to help guide the strategy of companies wishing to navigate through this change. We've helped start ups who provide services for the direct-to-fan economy; we've also helped record labels to re-purpose their strategy for the challenges of the industry today or to better understand how to optimise for streaming.

I started the Tunes and Tales blog in May 2023 to give voice to my expertise as a strategist. I write longer-form articles about music and culture and have covered the BBC, Glastonbury, major label ownership of indies, the economics of fandom and the evolution of pop music on the blog. I wrote an article called "The Record Label Crisis" which has had thousands of reads and prompted a lot of discussion from industry leaders, followed by a series of articles that suggests remedies.

The Your Morning Coffee weekly newsletter is a critical source of industry news and allows me to get a sense of USA perspective on the topics impacting the industry. I'm also a fan of their podcast which often features big hitters on strategy like Will Page and Mark Mulligan. Jay Gilbert's been a great supporter of my blog and I've been lucky to be invited on the podcast a couple of times.

Nick Worthington is a renowned leader in A&R and a serial music entrepreneur, who also coaches artists and industry execs. One of the toughest parts of running your own business is not having manager-led guidance. I've been fortunate to have Nick's input as a mentor since setting up Clifton Consults. Nick's always on the forefront of experimentation with new business models in music, so our conversations are often catalysts for my blog writing, new ideas, or solutions for clients.

Chaos is a dance music imprint from Polydor out of Universal Music UK. It's an example of the type of label I believe will emerge as mainstream culture continues to dissolve. It has a strong identity built from a specific music culture, with brand-building happening through events and regular drops of cool merch. Chaos is also the home of many of the current success stories in dance music including Jazzy and Confidence Man.

Artist Development

Artist Management Companies

It surprises me that there's little innovation in the ways artists organise their business affairs or their routes to market at scale. Ellevate is an innovative new music management model that essentially provides a two-sided network connecting artists and managers. Ellevate provides artists with affordable and accessible expertise to develop and then build a viable business around their art. It also has an all-female team of founders, a rare find in start-ups and music companies.

Conferences and events are a great way to immerse your brain in industry hot topics and get a sense of future trends. There are a multitude of conferences out there but Wallifornia really hit the spot for me. It's just across the water from UK in Liege, Belgium. It's got a compact number of attendees so is great for networking and the hosts garner a great selection of speakers, many of whom are big hitters from the world of tech and investment.

Dorie Clark's key message is highly relevant to the music industry today. Outlined in this book and a number of podcasts, she demonstrates how success in any field or business is a long-term project; through analysis, she says it typically takes five years to be successful at anything. Devoid of the artificial accelerants of the old-school artist development funnel (as outlined here) the record business has discovered this to be true for artist development.

As frontline record labels struggle to break new artists, major-label investment in artist services is looking increasingly astute. The gold-standard example of this is the Rob Stringer-led acquisition of The Orchard by Sony Music. Sony used the The Orchard to up-and-downstream music to and from their front-line labels. In the UK The Orchard is led by Ian Dutt (who pioneered Artist Services at PIAS) who has been effective at maintaining the firm’s indie culture.
