I’m Carly Eiseman, an LA-based artist and creative director. Presently, I am the co-producer of Music Book Club, an event series highlighting authors in the music space. For the past 7 years, I was the research programs lead on Spotify for Artists research, strategizing and facilitating global studies amongst a musician and industry community. Prior I built the global influencer program at Rdio across 60+ countries. As an artist myself, I love working with tech companies and creatives to build out new expression and monetization tools, based on mixed methods research. I’m a former youth culture ethnographer and editorial director for music, travel and art content like Flyer Magazine, TheLobby.com and Park Hyatt’s Artphaire.com, where I interviewed influential artists including KAWS, Daniel Arsham, Kehinde Wiley, Vik Muniz, Tom Sachs and Mickalene Thomas, alongside curators such as the Brooklyn Museum’s Anne Pasternak and MoMA’s Paola Antonelli. These conversations informed and inspired the development of my own creative practice which began in 2017 simply by beginning to paint every day.

An old friend of mine once wrote a novel in Excel and this thinking transformed how I look at spreadsheets. I believe research is a group sport amongst everyone that is interested in the subject. Too often findings are lost in dead slides of an old deck versus in a living dashboard. Airtable is a powerful collaborative interface that allows you to basically run your own business from a series of integrated bases and interfaces.

This is my go-to tool for DIY research. Reduct is a collaborative transcript based video/audio tool that allows you to instantly edit your interviews and turn them into shareable content. While I’ve used it extensively in research, I really advocate its further use creatively as it allows teams to basically make sizzle reels as well as short docs.

An Art Biennale after a few recs around research tools? Yes. My entire practice is grounded in the global nature of contemporary art and thinking about the needs of artists everywhere. Every 2 years, I make it a point to trek my way to Italy to spend half a week looking at art in gardens and factories, on deserted islands, down alleys, in abandoned churches. It’s really led my thinking about expression beyond music, to video, AR/VR, gaming, wellness and beyond. It is the ultimate discovery trip for all forms of art.

When I first started working in music, my job was to pick up DJs from the airport and take them record shopping and to dinner before their gigs. I always liked taking people to local spots that showed off how global LA was, like my favorite taco stand or a little ramen place just down the block. People often ask how to break the ice and connect with strangers. I like to say, “Eat with them!” Culinary Backstreets runs walking tours around the world and they bring joy and taste everywhere they go. There’s often a musical component to it too - like winding up in a secret jazz museum in the Treme in New Orleans.

Dirt, along with Air Mail, are my 2 favorite digital publications covering all things culture. Dirt, which is also a DAO, features many up and coming writers that chronicle happenings across media, fashion and the internet. Most of Air Mail’s stories I wish were Netflix shows.

Jeff Weiss is one of my favorite thinkers in music and culture. His blog, Passion of the Weiss, features many first interviews with talent to watch. He makes everyone he meets want to become a scholar of global rap. I also think he’s one of the funniest writers in culture, period.
